Dan Coffill Case Study

Metropolitan officer, PC Dan Coffill, was enjoying a night out with friends at a night club in Bromley, Kent in July 2005. As they were leaving the club, they were asked by a group of young menfor a light for their cannabis joints. When they refused, they were spat on. Dan was about put himself on duty to arrest them and was rewarded with a heavy punch to the side of the head, which put him down, followed by a kick to the head. He lost consciousness immediately.

As a result of this attack, Dan sustained severe brain injury and was comatose. He was given two weeks to live but pulled through and is now in a permanent vegetative state. Unable to communicate, but apparently aware of his surroundings, he spent eight months in hospital before being released into the care of his mother.

His mother was living at the time in a one-bedroom maisonette which was clearly not suitable for Dan's care and comfort. The PDT provided Dan and his mother with a detached bungalow to live in to help relieve the burden on Dan's mother and to enable Dan to live as comfortably as possible in his very severely disabled state.

Please pass on my thanks to the Police Dependants' Trust for their kind cheque. It really helps. Thank you.
